Maimonides Disparages Morality. One book of the Talmud is devoted to what the rabbis considered proper behavior. It is called in Hebrew Pirkei Avot and in English Ethics of the Fathers, the “fathers,” meaning the ancient rabbis. Maimonides, Judaism’s greatest thinker (), wrote a commentary on parts of the Talmud and sometimes introduced his commentaries with extended essays. Pirkei Avot has also been the subject of intense study and con-temporary comment in our sister denominational circles. Our Conservative colleagues Rabbis Tamar Elad-Appelbaum and Gor-don Tucker published a compelling commentary on Pirkei Avot, Teachings of the Sages, in Lev Shalem, the new prayer book of the Conservative Movement.

Though he was one of the great halachic authorities of Italy, his fame rests primarily on his commentaries to many books of the Scripture. However, he wrote extensively on other areas of the Torah as well, and his commentary on Pirkei Avos/Ethics of the Fathers is one of his little known gems/5(4).
